Last week I finished working in Cambridge after building a pod structure on wheels. I had a great time getting on with some constructing and also chatting to artist Rosalie Schweiker, who is running the ‘Emely Cafe’ at Aid & Abet at the moment.

The ‘Reading Space’ that I made was especially for Kobo Abe’s book ‘The Box Man’. The idea is that the reader can get into this space, wheel it around until they find just the right spot and settle down to read. There is a cup holder for coffee too of course and a plush red seat. A hole in the floor allows the user to out one foot through and scoot themselves about flintstones-style.

Rosalie kindly filmed some short snippets of me road-testing the reading pod. Here I use it to steal cake.

Reading Space on The Emely’s vimeo channel

Artist Corinna Spencer has also taken some great photos of the exhibition – see them on Flikr here

I will be starting a new body of work; working towards my first ever solo show at Yorkshire Sculpture Park early in 2011. Can’t wait to get stuck in.

An exhibition opens here at the Salzamt on Friday 24th July. Most artists have bought work with them, but limited by Ryanair’s measly 15kg allowance and the fact that most of my work is squashable, I have nothing with me to show. This goes a long way to explaining the mess I have made in my studio frantically shredding cardboard and going through much paper as I make and reject drawings. Still it is good to be making lots and to be drawing so much. The space I will be using to show is a lovely little niche and images will follow of the show set up when I have settled on some suitable work. In the meantime, I also want to stress the joy and usefulness of having a 7ft pin board in your studio – fantastic stuff!

I am here, it is lovely and my studio is enormous. Just about settled in now so looking forward to really getting stuck in to some new work. My head is overflowing with ideas so I shall have to try and start somewhere, I find myself gravitating towards writing again. Seems like there is a lot to see here too so, excited about seeing some new artists and perhaps a different approach to showing work?

Found out last week that Liverpool Biennial put me forward for a residency over the summer with Linz Kutur at the Atelierhaus; a newly renovated artists studio centre and exhibition space in the centre of Linz, Austria.

So, I leave on Tuesday – loads of time to plan and everything. But, this last-minute-ness may be a blessing in disguise so I am ready to get there and just see what happens…. Linz seems to be a bit of a rebel as far as Austria is concerned, with loads of contemporary art and architecture, not to mention the Ars Electronica Centre and festival, can’t wait!

I may even come back all digital!

new blog on a-n to document the process coming soon and I shall be having an online conversation throughout with Fiona Flynn, an artist from London, who will be in Vilnius (the other Capital of Culture this year) at the same time..

Bye for now.
