\"Innards\"<\/a> \"Innards_2\"<\/a> \"Innards_3\"<\/a> \"Innards_4\"<\/a>A Woman’s Place at Knole has just opened and my work, Innards<\/em>, is one of the six new commissions, curated by Day & Gluckman.<\/p>\n

I was especially interested in three women connected to Knole: Victoria Sackville-West, Josefa Dur\u00e1n known as\u00a0Pepita<\/em>\u00a0(her mother and infamous flamenco-dancer), and Vita Sackville-West (her daughter). A working fountain,\u00a0Innards\u00a0<\/em>borrows the form of a dressing table and makes public a space usually reserved for private ritual. Water, architecture, gardening and intimacy are brought together to reference important elements of these women\u2019s lives. The title refers to the guts of the women and the divide between the refined exterior of life at Knole and the more hidden daily workings and relationships that existed.<\/p>\n

The fountain echoes Victoria\u2019s incredible energy and the installation\u00a0of running water, electricity and telephone\u00a0which she oversaw\u00a0at Knole. The planting of Heliotrope nods to Vita\u2019s later career as a gardener. It was also the base note of Victoria\u2019s favourite scent. The work alludes to the difficulties and complexities of these mother\u2013daughter relationships, and of finding moments for tenderness, care and sensuality against the backdrop of public display and the performance of being a \u2018lady\u2019 of Knole.<\/p>\n
