Aufbau

Battenburg cake displayed with photograph under glass

Made as part of Expand, Explore, Expose at Salzamt Atelierhaus, Linz.Salzamt Atelierhaus, Aufbau is a battenburg cake in the same shape as architectural models (shown in the black and white archive image) made for Adolf Hitler by Albert Speer. The models showed a new plan for Linz, although aside from two buildings, this was never realised. The cake building is what was intended to be the new art gallery, which would have housed the (mostly plundered) art collection of the Third Reich. I invited visitors to the ehibition to eat the model while having a conversation about the implications of the plans. The model disappeared within an hour, with people having taken away little parts of the building away inside them.
