I wanted to share this amazing work by Jo, a member of Blue Room, an arts service for people with learning difficulties that runs three days a week at the Bluecoat. I visited them while Topophobia was on, and they came into the gallery a couple of times to see me performing inside my work.
They responded to my work by making small environments in boxes and, in the case of Jo, making a full-body costume. There are even small holes in the headpiece where her hair can come through. Amazing!

Panoply is a kind of hiding place made high above the normal passageways of the gallery, shielding me from the other inhabitants, like armour for my body. Fractured glimpses of my body are visible as I move around the space. This narrow corridor is like a wooden cloak or carapace, but the privacy it affords also turns into a trap; a claustrophobic space I can’t leave without being seen.
2012 is a year of big things, literally… with a new commission for the Bluecoat leg of Topophobia in the works alongside my new commission for the Open Eye gallery’s external wall.
I can’t tell you how nice it is to be working with galleries in Liverpool!
