Sfogliatelle – a print

My new print (made with amazing printmaker Emma Gregory) Sfogliatelle is currently on sale at the Bluecoat to help raise money for the Print Studios.  Each print is £120 (unframed) and they are available to purchase from Tickets & Information in the hub.

Sfogliatelle

Sfogliatelle by Emily Speed, Ten-layer Screen Print, 2013, Limited Edition of 50

About the work:

Sfogliatelle (a type of Italian pastry and meaning ‘many leaves/layers’) continues to explore a sculptural work Facades/Flats that Emily Speed made in Rome in 2012. Façades/Flats looked at the layers of theatrical façades that exist within a city, especially those whose bricks, design or size communicate power and clearly signify exclusion. Speed is also interested in the ever-changing nature of cities and how quickly buildings appear and disappear. In the print, several layers do not really exist; they are made using only negative space and hopefully create a slippery space that one can never be totally certain about.

Blue Room

I wanted to share this amazing work by Jo, a member of Blue Room, an arts service for people with learning difficulties that runs three days a week at the Bluecoat. I visited them while Topophobia was on, and they came into the gallery a couple of times to see me performing inside my work.

They responded to my work by making small environments in boxes and, in the case of Jo, making a full-body costume. There are even small holes in the headpiece where her hair can come through. Amazing!

Panoply, 2012
Space for a body: scaffold and painted wood.
20ft x 3ft x 8ft

[A panoply is a complete suit of armour or a complete set of diverse components.”panoply” refers to the full armour of a hoplite or heavy-armed soldier, i.e. the shield, breastplate, helmet and greaves, together with the sword and lance.] Source

Panoply is a kind of hiding place made high above the normal passageways of the gallery, shielding me from the other inhabitants, like armour for my body. Fractured glimpses of my body are visible as I move around the space. This narrow corridor is like a wooden cloak or carapace, but the privacy it affords also turns into a trap; a claustrophobic space I can’t leave without being seen.
